Healthcare services giant Blue Cross of Jamaica, has highlighted this week’s celebration of Insurance Week with the launch of EconoBlue, a new health plan for low-income earners, including domestic workers and casual labourers. The announcement was made by Mr David Garel, V.P., Customer Services & Marketing, at an official ceremony held yesterday (July 7, 2003) at the company’s Head Office in Kingston.
During his address, Mr. Garel described EconoBlue as ‘the most affordable health plan today’, covering the medical care needs of subscribers at a very low cost, with premiums as low as $570 per month, while offering benefits for the individual and/or family.
Mr. Garel also made note of some of the attractive benefits of econoblue, which include shared payments (between the Company and the subscriber) for doctor’s visit, hospital room & board, prescription drugs, surgeon’s fees and maternal deliveries.
Dr. Heather Little-White, guest speaker at the function, commended BCJ on the launch of the product, pointing out that though “it is the government’s intention to empower persons to ensure their own health care, government is unable at this time to offer free funding; therefore the role of the private sector in financing health care is critical in raising the quality of life for Jamaicans.”
Dr. Little-White, Managing Director of Little-White & Associates also remarked that the company had made an indelible mark of healthcare in the country, by improving the quality of life for Jamaican families. Little-White and Associates has been working closely with the Jamaica Household Workers Association in recent years, by conducting training programmes in home management and culinary skills for household helpers.
EconoBlue may be purchased by employers for their employees or individuals may subscribe on their own by contacting BCJ’s Customer Services department. Premiums are payable on a quarterly, half yearly or annual basis.
High commendations also came from Ms. Evelyn Scott, President of the Jamaica Household Workers Association; Mr. Dunstan Whittingham, General Secretary, Jamaica Vendors, Higglers and Markets Association; and Mrs. Deena Davis, President of the Small Business Association of Jamaica, who were all in attendance at the launch.
