Blue Cross to hold Medical Symposium on infectious diseases this Sunday

Blue Cross of Jamaica will hold its 18th Annual Medical Symposium on Sunday, November 16 at the Jamaica Conference Centre under the theme “Emerging and Resurgent Infectious Diseases”. Health Minister John Junor will officially open the event, which takes place from 9:00am to 2:30pm.

Dr. Wycliffe Wright, a Consultant on Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases out of Nashville, Tennessee, USA, will deliver this year’s keynote address on “Bacterial Infections: Judicious Choices in Antibiotics”. He has done extensive work in the field, and up June of this year, he served as ER Physician/ Infectious Disease Consultant at the Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital.

Dr. Wright received his early training in medicine at the University of the West Indies and has lectured at several universities in Jamaica, the Bahamas and the United States.

Other presentations and speakers at the Blue Cross Symposium will include:
“Epidemiological Trends in Viral Illnesses” - Professor Celia Christie, Consultant on Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology and Public Health, UHWI;
“Clinical Manifestation of HIV/AIDS: Emerging Trends” – Dr. Garfield Forbes;
“Oral Manifestation of HIV/AIDS: A Dental Perspective” – Dr. Mark Edwards, Dental Practitioner;
“Therapeutic Regimens in HIV/AIDS” – Dr. Tina Hylton-Kong, Medical Director, Epidemiology & Research Training Institute, Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training Centre (ERTU-CHART);
“Fungal Infections: Predisposing Factors in Today’s World” - Dr. Allison Nicholson, Consultant and Lecturer, Medical Microbiology, UWI/UHWI.

A panel discussion on the “Management of Common Bacterial and Fungal Problems” will follow the presentations. The panellists include Dr. Sandrea McLeod-Douglas, Dermatologist; Dr. Matthew Taylor, Gynaecologist; and Dr. Robert Parkes, Internist.

The Symposium is one of Blue Cross’ many initiatives aimed at the promotion of wellness and the empowerment of individuals and the wider community.
During the past five years, the Symposium has featured themes such as toxicity in health care, new health care technologies, men’s health issues, the elderly, and trends in the detection and management of cancer.
