Mr. Richard Powell, President and CEO of Blue Cross of Jamaica, has lauded Jamaican senior citizens for their dedication and sacrifice in the past, and for the meaningful contribution many continue to make today.
Speaking at the launch of the National Insurance Gold Health Plan today (December 10) at the Chinese Benevolent Association complex at 176 Old Hope Road, Mr Powell said:
“It is a sad fact that many of us Jamaicans do not fully appreciate the precious resources we have in our older folks. As we become more and more caught up with the excitement of cutting edge technology, the information revolution and other modern marvels, we need to remember that they are the foundation upon which all of our new achievements have been built.”
Noting that predictions suggested that the number of older persons in the world would triple by 2050, the Blue Cross President continued, “This is all the more reason to ensure that our senior citizens have the best possible facilities and quality of life, with no area being more critically important than that of health care.
“…Blue Cross of Jamaica is therefore honoured to have been awarded the contract to administer the National Insurance Scheme Health Plan for its Pension Beneficiaries… As Jamaica’s only specialized health insurance company, we are also proud of our expertise and confident that we can provide the best possible administration for this vitally important programme… Just as important as our capabilities is our commitment. Blue Cross of Jamaica has demonstrated its commitment to the senior citizens of this country by developing a number of special health plans for this group.”
During the ceremony, the contract for the administration of the NI Gold Health Plan was signed.
Hon. Horace Dalley, Minister of Labour & Social Security, delivered the keynote address. Mr. Alvin McIntosh, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour & Social Security served as the Master of Ceremonies. Mrs. Daphne Clayton, NIS Administrator for St. Catherine offered the prayer, and Mr. Clinton Davis, President of the Government Pensioner’s Association, moved the vote of thanks.
