In a highly anticipated presentation, Blue Cross of Jamaica launched its Group Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment products at the Hilton Hotel on May 26. This expansion into the life insurance market signals a new era for the prestigious company, which has been in existence for almost fifty years.

Outgoing Blue Cross President and CEO, Mr. Richard Powell, remarked on the growth of BCJ throughout the years to become the leading provider of health care insurance in Jamaica. Since its inception, the company has consistently sought to offer a wide range of products and services that best suit the needs of its large customer base. Mr. Powell stated further, “This is the first in a series of product launches, which will collectively introduce to the market a range of life insurance products and services. Our emphasis will continue to be group products that will be complimentary to the wide range of health insurance products that are already available”.

President and CEO designate, Professor the Honourable Errol Morrison, congratulated Blue Cross on almost fifty years of outstanding service to Jamaica. He looked forward to the future of this exceptional company and expressed his commitment to the well-being of the large clientele that depends on Blue Cross every day. Professor Morrison also spoke about the importance of alternative medicines and announced that Blue Cross will soon be providing coverage for these therapies.

Mr. David Garel, Vice President Marketing and Customer Service for Blue Cross, gave an informative overview of the Group Life product, which offers life insurance to occupational groups of five or more active full-time employees. Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage can be added to an existing Group Life plan and these products are the first in a series of exciting additions to the company’s menu of services.

Blue Cross recently changed its classification under the Insurance Act of 2001 from a general insurance company to a life insurance company and therefore looks forward to expanding its product base to become a major player in the life insurance market.
