KINGSTON, December 12, 2005 - Professor the Hon. Errol Morrison, President and CEO of Blue Cross of Jamaica, an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, has called for a mentorship programme for members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. The Blue Cross® chief was speaking at the fundraising luncheon of the Past Members of the JCF Benevolent Society on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering of past members of the constabulary, Professor Morrison encouraged them to “Turn and see how best you can use your experiences to assist your younger members who now serve. You all represent, hundreds of years of man-experience in crime fighting, community development and nation building. Organise yourselves as mentors, and become assigned to groups of young officers whom you will guide and assist in whatever way and whatever time they call for help and guidance.”
Professor Morrison' s address was delivered as part of an initiative to promote economic growth through the lowering of crime rates and better health practices.
“It costs the society too much when we fail to properly resolve our conflicts. Where people would communicate their differences in times past, the general trend these days is to come to blows, he said. “Unfortunately, weapons come into play, and people are injured, maimed, or killed, all because we simply cannot find better ways to articulate our grievances.”
The former police officers were also encouraged to teach those currently in the service how to relate better to the public, and be better stewards of a profession that was once revered.
