Blue Cross® Founder's Day

June 22, 2006

Pharmacist, certified accountant, dedicated patriot, Sydney Emerson Anderson was born on December 7, 1909 in the parish of St. Ann to parents Ezekiel & Rebecca Anderson.  He attended Brown’s Town High School before training as a pharmacist at the Kingston Public Hospital.  He became a certified accountant in 1951.  He continued his training in public health at Westminster Hospital in London and Columbia University School of Public Health in London.

In celebration of 50 years in the health insurance business, Blue Cross of Jamaica returns to its original site for Founder’s Day.  Founded by then UHWI Administrator, the Sydney Anderson, the company has revolutionised health care and health care delivery in Jamaica. One of few insurance companies to withstand the financial meltdown of the 90s, Blue Cross continues to champion the cause of wellness for every Jamaican. It was one man’s dream.

Prof. Errol Morrison in his remarks at Founder’s Day stated that, “as an employee and member of the Board of Trustees, I have a very privileged position as President and CEO to lead a staff of nearly 300 hardworking people, who are committed to making your health their daily priority.  It is as a result of their time and love for Blue Cross of Jamaica that we have grown from strength to strength in each of our five decades in business.

Our deepest gratitude is to you, our subscriber, provider, client, friend, and family member. You believed our commitment to you when we first started and fifty years later, you are still loyal.  We acknowledge that you have had many choices over the years, but have chosen to continue to carry our Care Card as your symbol of reassurance when you need it most.

We are committed to you, not only when you are ill, but when you are well, to preserve your wellness and keep sickness at bay.  However, if you do suffer ill health, we will continue to give you the best care and coverage so that you can get back to your loved ones and your life as soon as possible.

We truly understand that the business of health is not just about insurance, or about finance.  Our promise for the next fifty years is that we will only get better.  Many things will change, the challenges may come but I give you my assurance that “Our Only Concern Is You”.
