KINGSTON, August 23, 2006- Yesterday, Blue Cross of Jamaica held its award ceremony for the GSAT Scholarship Programme in honour of 27 recipients. With a total value of 1.85 million over five years, awardees were children of private and public sector subscribers as well as Blue Cross staff subscribers.
The Blue Cross of Jamaica Scholarship Programme, now in its 13th year, is fulfilling the organisation’s ongoing corporate and philanthropic commitment to advance and enrich the quality of life of our people.
The recipients are selected in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture from amongst those students placed in traditional high schools based on their level of performance in the designated category.
The scholarships are awarded in two categories:
Blue Cross of Jamaica administers the GEASO Health Scheme for government employees. The GEASO scholarships are awarded in the following categories:
Three to the children of civil servants;
Three to the children of teachers;
Two to the children of Police Officers
i.e. Regulars, Special and District Constables.
Four scholarships are awarded to the children of employees of private sector entities who are enrolled on the Blue Cross group health plan.
Scholarships are awarded to Blue Cross employee’s children who have been successful in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) for entry into high schools. The amount of scholarships awarded in this category will vary yearly based on those who qualify.
